RA I Training on "Assessment of National Needs and Capabilities in End-to-End Flood Forecasting and Early Warning Systems"
The Egyptian Meteorological Agency, through it's WMO Regional Training Centre (RTC-Cairo), are hosting together with WMO the RA I Training on "Assessment of National Needs and Capabilities in End-to-End Flood Forecasting and Early Warning Systems". The training focuses on delivering capacity to hydrologists and meteorologists of African NMHSs. Major General Hesham Hassan Ibrahim Abdelaaty TAHOUN, Permanent Representative of Egypt to WMO, provided opening remarks to the event, highlighting the necessity to enhance such capacities in Africa, as extreme events such as floods and droughts affect the continent due to climate change and that this is a timely effort in line with the ambitious UN initiative of Early Warnings for All (EW4All).
Training
The main document that guides the delivery of this training is the "Assessment Guidelines for End-to-End Flood Forecasting and Early Warning Systems" (WMO-No. 1286). This document provides steps to follows when applying a matrix to understand the capacities and needs of countries for establishing EWS for floods.
The training consists of two parts:
- Online section with the general materials and basic information that participants have to go through. These materials are available through WMO's Moodle Site (link to course here).
- Face-to-Face training at the RTC-Cairo in Cairo, Egypt from 13 to 17 October 2024 for hands-on exercises to implement the tool. The agenda is available here.
The training is bringing together participants from thirteen African countries, namely Cameroon, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.
