About Us
About Us
Regional Association V (South-West Pacific) serves as the regional body of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for states and territories in the South-West Pacific region, coordinating meteorological, hydrological, and climate services to enhance weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and disaster risk reduction across one of the world's most climatically diverse and vulnerable regions.
Our Mission
RA V works to strengthen meteorological and hydrological services throughout the South-West Pacific region by facilitating cooperation among national meteorological and hydrological services, promoting the exchange of data and information, and supporting capacity-building initiatives. Our mission is to enhance the region's resilience to weather, water, and climate-related hazards while supporting sustainable development goals.

Regional Characteristics
The South-West Pacific region is characterized by its vast oceanic expanse, diverse topography ranging from high mountains to low-lying atolls, and extreme vulnerability to climate variability and change. The region spans from the tropical archipelagos of Southeast Asia to the remote Pacific islands, experiencing some of the world's most intense tropical cyclones, monsoon systems, and significant challenges from sea-level rise.
This unique geographic and climatic setting requires specialized approaches to meteorological services, such as marine meteorology, tropical cyclone forecasting, monsoon prediction, climate monitoring, and early warning systems for extreme weather events across both continental and island nations.

Governance and Leadership
RA V operates under the governance structure of WMO, with regular sessions held every four years where Member States/Territories review progress, set priorities, and make decisions on regional activities. The association is supported by working groups and expert teams that focus on specific technical areas such as meteorology, hydrology, climatology, and disaster risk reduction.
The regional association works closely with other international organizations, regional bodies like ASEAN and PMC, and development partners to coordinate activities and maximize the impact of meteorological and hydrological services in supporting sustainable development and climate resilience across the South-West Pacific.
WMO Secretariat
RA V is supported by the WMO Regional Office for Asia and the South-West Pacific (RAP), headquartered in Singapore and with a representative office in Apia, Samoa
