The Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has, this week, approved WMO as an Observer on the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP).
The CAEP was established by ICAO in 1983 and is tasked to assist the Council in formulating new policies and adopting new Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
The CAEP covers a spectrum of disciplines including local air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, aircraft noise/noise pollution and, more recently, climate change. All of these are directly relevant to WMO's work and where a focus of engagement is expected to be placed. In addition, the CAEP addresses other issues including carbon offsetting initiatives, sustainable aviation fuels and clean energy, innovations in propulsion and airframe design, and the optimisation of flight procedures to reduce fuel burn.
The engagement of WMO in the activities of ICAO CAEP is in the spirit of the working arrangements between the two organizations and is seen an important development as the two specialized agencies of the United Nations respond to the needs of their Members and the broader international civil aviation industry on issues of the environment and climate change.
