Kick-Off Meeting: RA II Pilot Project on Public-Private Engagement for Smart Meteorological Services in Mega-Cities (PPE-SMSC)
The WMO RA II Pilot Project on Public-Private Engagement for Smart Meteorological Services in Mega-Cities (PPE-SMSC) kicked off via an online meeting on 25 February 2022. Representatives from Regional Association II (RA II), Technical Commissions and project hosts reviewed the project design and progress, and deliberated on the governance structure, workplan and timeline, marking a new phase in this pioneering initiative and endeavour.
PPE-SMSC is co-hosted by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) and Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG). As a response to the Geneva Declaration (2019): Building Community for Weather, Climate and Water Actions, the project aims to develop an integrated urban meteorological, climate and water services based on the PPE model. Approved as one of the pilot projects at the Seventeenth Session of RA II in 2021 (RA II-17), PPE-SMSC is the first of its kind initiated at the regional level, with targeted project deliverables expected to be replicated and scaled up across other regions and beyond.
Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, president of RA II, and Dr Wenjian Zhang, Assistant Secretary-General of WMO, addressed the kick-off meeting with deep appreciation and high expectations. This pilot project will carry on for 4 years initially in accordance with the RA II Operating Plan (2021-2024).
