Integration of urban-related activities in WMO

The Resolution 68 of the seventeenth session of the World Meteorological Congress: “Establishing a WMO cross cutting urban focus” called on WMO acting as one on the urban issues. WMO reform restructured many activities of the organization leaving WMO contribution to the New Urban Agenda largely uncoordinated, which creates risks of work duplication, not-optimal design of urban observations and services and missed opportunities to contribute to large political processes like upcoming assessment on cities of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The workshop will bring together diverse groups working in WMO on urban agenda, will take stock of the existing activities and develop recommendations for improved coordination of urban-related activities across WMO Technical Commissions and Research Board.

Objectives of the workshop are:

  • To take stock of the urban related activities in WMO
  • To discuss recommendations on a potential coordination mechanism for such activities

Programme committee:  Estelle Grueter, Feng Liang, Tomas Halenka, Ranjeet Sokhi, Osvaldo Moraes and Wai Kin Wong
