International workshop on cataloguing and managing information on extreme weather, water and climate events
International workshop on cataloguing and managing information on extreme weather, water and climate events
World Meteorological Organization Headquarters, 20-23 November 2017
Background
There is a growing importance to track losses and damages associated with these extreme weather and climate events globally. Several international policy frameworks recognize the importance of averting, minimizing and addressing loss and damage with the adverse effects of climate change, which include extreme weather and climate events.
In support of achieving the goals and targets of these frameworks, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is organizing an international workshop on cataloguing and managing information on extreme weather, water and climate events at the WMO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland from 20-23 November 2017.
Participants from various disciplines are expected to take part in this workshop, including from meteorology, climatology, information management, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), risk transfer, and the like.
Expected Outcomes
The following outcomes are expected:
- Revised list of hydro-meteorological hazards and extremes and their definitions
- Recommendations on structure for the unique-identifiers of hazards and extreme events
- List of requirements for potential infrastructure aiming at hosting regional and global databases on extreme events
- Identification of potential partnerships among the WMO, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations, DRR communities and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, among others, for addressing information gaps and technical solutions for management of extreme event science based information on the national, regional and global scales, with linkages to loss and damage information.
