National training workshop on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) in Nepal
The WMO training on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) in Nepal marks a significant advancement in strengthening the country’s disaster preparedness and response capabilities. This initiative was made possible through the financial support of the CREWS EW4All Accelerator in SIDS and LDCs Project.
This workshop co-developed with the support of the Department for Hydrology and Meteorology with support from the Center for Applied Research and Development brought together a range of national and international stakeholders. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) also provided resource personnel for this training.
Innovative approaches are being employed to accelerate the adoption of the CAP standard by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and other alerting authorities. These include customizing strategies to fit local contexts, reinforcing existing infrastructure, building upon ongoing initiatives and strengthening collaborative networks for global CAP implementation. To support regional knowledge sharing and capacity building, the workshop also benefits from the expertise of a regional CAP trainers from India, specifically the India Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Management Authority. This is meant to bring valuable experience and cross-border insights to the training.
