RA VI Management Group Sixth Meeting - Key Highlights
The RA VI Management Group, chaired by Dr. Elena Mateescu, the RA VI president, held its sixth meeting on January 25, 2024 online.
The group discussed updates on WMO initiatives, regional priorities, capacity development, and upcoming events. Key topics included reviewing WMO CBs' decisions, implementing early warning systems across RA VI, and preparing for upcoming EC, SERCOM, and INFCOM sessions.
Dr. Mateescu presented the EW4All Action Plan, which outlines a roadmap for implementing early warning systems across RA VI, with a target of operationalization by 2027. The plan includes measures such as training for NMHS offices, competency management frameworks, and fostering international collaboration through twinning arrangements. Infrastructure improvements, research, and innovation were identified as key components, and regional workshops and stakeholder coordination meetings were suggested to advance national strategies.
Capacity development activities included discussing a draft document on regional contributions to the research-to-operations continuum, endorsed adjustments to the value chain chart, and preparations for the WMO Capacity Development Panel meeting.
Updates were provided on the Arctic Regional Climate Centre designation, plans for a similar RCC for Antarctica and high mountain areas, and the release of the 2023 State of Climate report in Brussels.
Communication and outreach were emphasized, with suggestions for diversifying communication channels and continuing newsletter use. Upcoming events and elections included the confirmation of the first phase of the RA VI session, which will be held online in October 2024 and in-person in 2026.
