Second Session of the Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP-2)

Overview

The WMO Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) held its first session (SAP-1) since it was established in 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland. Since its establishment, SAP members have collaborated virtually (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) to develop the SAP Vision Paper, which provides recommendations to guide WMO in the coming decades and was endorsed by the WMO Executive Council (EC) in June 2022, except a recommendation on geoengineering (Resolution 3 (EC-75)). Following the endorsement of the SAP Vision Paper, the SAP-1 session provided an opportunity for SAP members to discuss next steps to finalize the paper and promote it ahead of the WMO Congress in May 2023. SAP members also discussed other issues, such as membership and what a new SAP mandate could look like post-2023.

Summary of Key Outcomes

  • identified next steps to finalize the SAP Vision Paper and associated recommendations
  • identified next steps to seek new members
  • identified other activities, such as developing a short paper summarizing the final SAP Vision Paper for publication
