The Goal

The goal of the Solomon Islands CREWS-Canada Sub-Project on Impact-based Forecast and Warning (IBFWS)  is to introduce IBFWS to the staff of Solomon Islands Meteorological Services (SIMS), the Disaster Management Authority and other stakeholders, and to train them in the necessary skills, to enable them implement IBFWS in the country.

The Objectives and Expected Outcomes 

This training workshop is part of the CREWS-Canada Sub-Project on Impact-based Forecast and Warning (IBFWS) for the South East Asia and Pacific Small Island States.  The workshop has been developed following the kind invitation of the Solomon Islands Government and through a consultative process between the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) and partners. It is organized by the Disaster Risk Reduction and Public Service Branch (DRR-PS) of the Services Department, in collaboration with the Member Services and Development Department.  Click here for more information.

Participants are requested to open the List of Participants, enter their contact details and paste a passport size photo against their names.

Workshop Local Facilitators

The local facilitators will assist in conducting both live and self-guided sessions. They will help to ensure a smooth running of the Workshop including facilitating breakout groups when lecturers request it. The names of session facilitators are included in the Workshop Programme.

The Workshop Programme provides information on the sessions, timings, objectives, lecturers and local workshop facilitators.

Workshop Training Material

The IBF training material is accessible through links provided in the workshop Programme, for both live and self-guided sessions. You will notice that some materials have been presented in video format while others are in ppt format. Participants are invited to consult the training materials during self-guided sessions and before each live session. This will make it easier for them to follow the live sessions with the lecturers under the Video Conference setting.

Guidance notes  for live sessions

Live sessions will be conducted through video conferencing in the mornings, in Solomon Islands, for 2hrs 30min to 3 hours starting 0800hrs local time. Participants are expected to be at the Workshop venue early so that sessions can start on time. It may be noted that due to the time difference between Solomon Islands and countries of some lecturers, they will be conducting the sessions at different times from 18:00hrs to beyond midnight depending on the country they will be in. Please note the following:

  • Live sessions will be started 30 minutes before in order to allow everyone to log in before commencement of the session - this will also allow us to to test sound and video.
  • The local facilitator will coordinate the session locally in liaison with the lecturer.
  • Since this is an online workshop, lecturers will make presentations, uninterrupted.
  • Participants may therefore post questions on the  Q and A  so that they are responded to at the end of the presentations.
  • The local facilitator will manage the Q and A.
  • All the sessions will be recorded and shared later.

Guidance notes  for the self-guided sessions

The self-guided (or self-directed) sessions are planned to take place every day after the live session. Instructions or clarification of what will be expected of the participant will be provided during the live sessions. Any questions you may have during the self-guided sessions may be written and submitted by clicking on this link for writing questions during self guided sessions. Responses to the questions posted during the self-guided session will be provided on the following day.

WMO Certificate 

All participants who attend the Workshop fully will receive a WMO certificate of attendance for the Workshop. 

Comet Certificate 

On the Comet MetEd, you will take a self-guided quiz on Thursday 29 October 2020. If you receive a score equal to or higher than the pass mark, you will receive a certificate for this particular COMET IBF training. Certificates are provided as PDF files that you can download. Please note that you can always retake the quiz (if you strive for a higher score).
