Twelfth Session of the Commission for Hydrology

Participants of the twelfth Session of the Commission for Hydrology Geneva 2004 The Twelfth Session of the Commission for Hydrology was held in Geneva from 20-29th October 2004. More than 160 delegates - a record maximum - from 55 countries, representing National Hydrological and Meteorological Services along with representatives of International Organizations attended the session. The Commission for Hydrology (CHy) is one of the eight Technical Commissions of WMO which advise in the planning, implementation and evaluation of its scientific programmes.

The Commission elected Mr Bruce Stewart of Bureau of Meteorology, Australia, and Mr Julius Wellens Mensah of National Hydrological Service, Ghana, as President and Vice President respectively for the four year period 2004-2008. They will be supported by a team of seven hydrology and water resources specialists during the next intersessional period working as members of the Advisory Working Group and a pool of 110 experts from different parts of the world.

IAHS International Hydrological Prize Award

During a ceremony held on 26 October, in conjunction with the twelfth session of the Commission for Hydrology, the 2004 IAHS International Hydrological Prize was awarded.

The prize is awarded annually since 1981 to hydrologists who have made an outstanding contribution to the science. It is awarded by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) with the support of WMO and UNESCO and the list of past recipients includes Professor J. Nemec, former Director of the Hydrology and Water Resources (HWR) Department of the WMO Secretariat.

On this occasion the Prize was awarded to Dr. John Rodda, who was Director of the HWR Department from 1988 to 1995. In his awarding speech Dr Arthur Askew, President-Elect of IAHS, highlighted Dr Rodda's long service, not only to WMO but also to IAHS and UNESCO, referring to him as a man who seizes opportunities to launch projects of benefit to the water community at large. He credited Dr Rodda with launching, amongst others, the FRIEND programme of UNESCO and WMO and the WHYCOS programme of WMO.
