WIPPS Workshop: as the Second World Meteorological Centres Workshop (Geneva, Switzerland)

WMO Integrated Processing and Prediction System (WIPPS), previously known as Global Data-processing and Forecasting System (GDPFS) (Res.4.2(6)/1(Cg-19), is a worldwide network of operational centres operated by WMO Members, covering a wide range of activities. The World Meteorological Centres (WMCs) play pivotal roles in processing observations, producing predictions, and delivering prediction products to WMO Members and related bodies.

The WIPPS Workshop 2023, as the 2nd WMC Workshop, is scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 14 to 16, 2023. This three-day event will have a hybrid format to accommodate participants unable to travel. The outcomes of the Workshop will be considered by SC-ESMP and be reported to INFCOM-3 in April 2024.

The Workshop will seek to facilitate the implementation of new requirements to meet user needs for the “Early Warnings for All" initiative. Key objectives of the Workshop will be, inter alia, to:

  • Review existing capabilities and activities to enhance future WIPPS activities covering all the Earth system domains and spatial and temporal scales;
  • Articulate requirements for meeting the objectives of WMO strategic plan, and discuss the gaps to meet future WIPPS requirements to address all Earth system domains;
  • Identify actions for WMCs, and where applicable jointly with the Severe Weather Forecasting Programme (SWFP) and relevant Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres (RSMCs), to ensure the enhancement of the WIPPS activities necessary to implement objectives of the EW4All initiative;
  • Share good practices of training programs, training materials, and the way of knowledge sharing to effectively coordinate the capacity development among Regional Training Centres (RTCs), Regional Climate Centres (RCCs), and WMCs;
  • Develop coordination mechanisms among WMCs, RSMCs and also research communities to better leverage WIPPS activities.

Please find the concept note of the Workshop here. Further information will be made available in due course.
