RA VI Regional Conference
Social and Economic Benefits
of Weather, Climate and Water Services

The XV Session of RA VI (Brussels, 2009) strongly encouraged further work by the Members in the socio-economic assessment of the weather, climate and water services in order to demonstrate better the benefits to society and various economic sectors brought by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS). Members were encouraged to contribute to the Madrid Action Plan developed by the International Conference on "Secure and sustainable living: Social and economic benefits of weather, climate and water services", Madrid, March 2007.

As a follow-up on the XV-RA VI recommendation, the WMO is organizing, in collaboration with MeteoSwiss, and at the kind invitation of the Government of Switzerland, the WMO RA VI Conference on Social and Economic Benefits of Weather, Climate and Water Services, which will be held at Lucerne, Switzerland, from 3 to 4 October 2011.

The objective of the Conference is to promote and stimulate the conduct of socio-economic assessments and studies among the RA VI Members. It will provide a forum for discussing the outcomes of recent studies carried out by different Members and reviewing related methodologies. It is expected that the Conference will provide essential material for the development of regional guidelines on the subject with outline of good practices in order to build the capacity of the NMHSs in the Region for conducting socio-economic analyses and studies.

Due to the importance of the subject, the Conference is aimed at the senior management of the NMHSs. The Programme for the event is currently being developed and will be provided to the nominated experts in due course.
