High-Level Conference on Climate Challenges in South-Eastern Europe Reinforces Regional Cooperation
The High-Level Conference on the Challenges of Climate Change in South-Eastern Europe, held from 4 to 6 February 2025 in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia, brought together policymakers, directors of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, partner agencies and experts to address the region’s increasing climate risks.
The event was marked by the highest-level representation from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), with Secretary-General Prof. Celeste Saulo and Dr. Kornélia Radics, Director of the WMO Regional Office for Europe, addressing participants. They emphasized the urgency of coordinated action to tackle climate challenges, particularly in the face of rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and prolonged droughts affecting water resources, agriculture, and ecosystems.
Discussions at the conference focused on strengthening early warning systems, enhancing regional collaboration, and advancing sustainable climate adaptation. Key WMO initiatives, such as Early Warnings for All and Hydrological Status and Outlook System, were highlighted, alongside efforts to establish a Regional Agricultural Meteorological Centre under RA VI to complement the work of the Drought Management Centre for South-Eastern Europe.
A key side event, the meeting of NMHS Directors on 5 February, addressed enhancing the Drought Management Centre for South-Eastern Europe’s governance and operations. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening drought resilience through improved forecasting, partnerships, and coordinated regional efforts. The conference concluded with a strong call for action to reinforce climate resilience, international cooperation, and sustainable adaptation across South-Eastern Europe.
