IG3IS Urban Greenhouse Gas Emission Observation and Monitoring Best Research Practices

These Best Practice Guidelines are intended to provide technical guidance on current state-of-the-art technologies in urban greenhouse gas information systems.  It lays out the available methodologies and how they can best be implemented, as well as guidance on the end-user outputs that might be obtained from each methodology.  There are many unresolved challenges in this evolving field of research, and we include a discussion of ongoing research and considerations.

This is an evolving field of research, such that best practices will require regular updating as knowledge develops.  To this end, we recommend bi-annual updates to this document, with contributions solicited from researchers from around the world

This document has been developed by many members of the urban greenhouse gas research community.  The intent is to provide guidelines that can be used by researchers and stakeholders.

The first outline of these best research practices was developed during an online workshop in June 2020, with individuals nominated to lead each section.  Those authors have subsequently developed each section and annex, in conjunction with others from the research community, to produce this draft document.  The draft is open for expert and public comment until January 31st, 2022.  Following that date, comments and reviews will be incorporated into a final document, with an expected release date in May 2022.  Urban greenhouse gas research is evolving quickly, and we anticipate updating these Best Research Practices on a two-yearly basis.

The research community is essential to ensuring that these Best Research Practices are robust, accurate, and reflect state-of-the-art knowledge.  We welcome comments, suggestions, additions, and corrections.  Substantial contributions will result in authorship.

Prepare your comments in a review style format.  I.e. Use MSWord or a similar format, list the line number(s) for each comment, followed by the comment.

Comments and reviews should be submitted to gaw@wmo.int on or before January 31st, 2022.  Include “IG3IS Urban Guidelines Submission” in the subject line.
