UN Resident Coordinators Meet with WMO to Accelerate Sustainable Development in Europe and Central Asia

Representatives from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recently met with UN Resident Coordinators for Europe and Central Asia to strengthen collaboration and accelerate progress towards the achievement of sustainable development goals in the region.

The WMO delegation was headed by Mr. Filipe Domingos Freires Lúcio, Director of the Member Services & Development Department, and included Mrs. Kornelia Radics, Director of the WMO Regional Office for Europe, and Mrs. Natalia Berghi, Programme Officer of the WMO Regional Office for Europe.

During the meeting, the WMO delegation provided a brief presentation on their mandate and structure. The attendees then discussed ways to ensure effective implementation of WMO strategic objectives, with support from the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF), so that the benefits of WMO continue to be felt in the ECA region.

Discussions also focused on enabling the integration and implementation of WMO observing, information processing, and service delivery systems at the national level.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continue working towards sustainable development goals and strengthening collaboration between the UN Resident Coordinators and the WMO.

The WMO Secretariat remains in touch with the UN Development Cooperation Office to get more insights on the next steps for WMO legal membership in UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks and the UN Sustainable Development Group, which would allow WMO Member states to fully benefit from existing legal, administrative, and financial mechanisms, as well as the management and accountability framework.
