Water for Climate: strengthening water resilience to climate change and disasters in WMO Regional Association VI (Europe)

Water and Sanitation for all was the theme discussed at a round table on 30 March 2023. It was organized in a hybrid format both in presence at the Palais des Nations, Geneva and online via Zoom and was part of the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development for the UNECE region.

It was co-organized by the WMO Regional Office for Europe, the World Health Organization, UN Environmental Programme and International Organization for Migration under the co-leadership of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe and the Environment Division of the UN ECE.

This peer learning session brought together a variety of stakeholders to share the outcomes of the global UN 2023 Water Conference (New York, 22-24 March 2023) and discuss the next steps at the regional level, including how to take forward commitments from the region made at the global conference and good practice examples aimed at accelerating efforts to meet SDG 6 related targets.

The event addressed several questions, such as: Where do we stand and which are the greater challenges for the achievement of SDG 6 targets in the UNECE region? What are the key outcomes of the UN 2023 Water Conference and next steps at the regional level? What are the priority policy actions to accelerate the achievement of sustainable water management targets by 2030, addressing both long-standing and emerging challenges? and What are effective, game-changing, and scalable solutions to support availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation in the UNECE region?

WMO Regional Association VI was represented by Dr Jan Daňhelka, who contributed to the 'Water for Climate: strengthen water resilience to climate change and disasters' session, presenting the progress and challenges on implementing the integrated water and drought management policy in Czech Republic.
