WMO and EUMETNET Strengthen Collaboration with New MoU
Following the success of two previous agreements, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the European Meteorological Network (EUMETNET) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in March 2024. This MoU builds on prior collaborations, the first signed in 2014 and the second in 2019, both successfully implemented until their expiration in 2018 and 2023 respectively.
The new MoU, spanning five years with provisions for renewal, focuses on harmonizing data protection, standardizing data representation, and establishing federated data infrastructure. Collaboration on EU-funded projects is also a key component.
It promotes information exchange, reciprocal invitations to events, and regular consultations to address common challenges.
The agreement also facilitates participation in each other's meetings and allows for the exchange of standards and best practices. EUMETNET will offer its norms for review by WMO Technical Commissions, aiming to elevate them as WMO standards.
With this agreement, WMO and EUMETNET are poised to enhance meteorological cooperation for the benefit of communities worldwide. Both Parties can agree to design and implement joint cooperation programmes and projects within their respective mandates and activities. The Secretary-General of WMO and the Executive Director of EUMETNET will ensure effective cooperation and liaison for the implementation of the provisions of this MoU. The Regional Office for Europe will follow closely the EUMETNET activities and attend the related meetings.
