WMO Webinar Series 2025-2026 - Bridging Science and Services: From Research to Operations
Starting this September, the WMO Regional Group on Research, supported by the WMO Regional Office for Europe, is launching a new webinar series, Research to Operations eXchange.
The series aims to bridge the gap between scientists, practitioners, and decision-makers in National Hydrometeorological Services, accelerating the translation of research into real-world solutions.
Integrating scientific advances into operational frameworks is vital for improving preparedness and response to weather- and climate-related events. Yet, this integration is often slowed by data limitations, resource constraints, and policy gaps. Through shared experiences and forward-looking discussions, the series will explore how to overcome these barriers.
Our goal is to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange that translate scientific advances into stronger preparedness and response capacities for both fast- and slow-onset events such as heatwaves, flash floods, and urban flooding.
The first lectures in the series include:
Artificial Intelligence for Detection and Attribution of Extreme Weather Events in Europe - 24 September 2025, 12:45–14:00 CEST
Featuring the EU Horizon 2020 XAIDA project with keynote by Prof. Dim Coumou (VU Amsterdam).
Supporting and standardizing climate services by fostering a community of practice - 9 October 2025, 12:45–14:00 CEST
Showcasing the ClimateEurope2 project with keynote by Prof. Francisco Doblas Reyes (Barcelona Supercomputing Centre).
Using real-world labs for enhancing climate disaster risk management across Europe - 6 November 2025, 09:00–10:30 CEST (hybrid event, Prague & online)
Featuring the DIRECTED project, part of the 2nd Regional Scientific Forum of RA VI.
Looking ahead to 2026:
The series will continue with sessions such as Multi-Risk Impact-Based Early Warning Systems to Empower Community Responses During Emergencies, highlighting the GOBEYOND project.
More information and updates on the Webinar series will be provided to the WMO RA VI Members states.
