Nanjing University, China

Principal Investigator (PI):

Prof ZHAO Kun

Co-PI:

Prof WANG Yuan

The Understanding and PreDiction of Rainfall Associated with landFalling Tropical cyclones (UPDRAFT) Research and Development Project was proposed by the Key Laboratory of Mesoscale Severe Weather (LMSWE) at Nanjing University (NJU)in 2013. After two preparatory meetings to work on the project's implementation plan, UPDRAFT commenced in November 2014. UPDRAFT's duration is from November 2014 to October 2021. UPDRAFT is jointly supported by WMO's World Weather Research and Tropical Cyclone Programmes. It is led by CAS/CMA and LMSWE/NJU.  UPDRAFT is closely collaborating with WMO's TLFDP and UN/ESCAP Typhoon Committee's EXOTICCA.

          SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES

To improve theunderstanding and prediction of rainfall associated with landfalling tropical cyclones.

Basic Research: To enhance the understanding of some key physical processes influencing the characteristics of tropical cyclone precipitation. To investigate what elements modulate the features of landfalling tropical cyclone rainfall, how they solely and/or jointly influence the rainfall characteristics and which are the dominant factors.

Applied Research: To develop an optimal configuration of state-of-the-art numerical models suitable for simulating and forecasting tropical cyclone rainfall. To develop new statistical and dynamical methods of predicting rainfall in landfalling tropincal cyclones and improve the performance of operational numerical models.
