WMO-Measurement Lead Centre for Doppler Light Detection And Ranging systems for aviation application, Hong Kong Observatory

(Hong Kong, China)

General Site Information

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has long experience in operating Doppler Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) systems, and analyzing and using Doppler LIDAR data in real-life applications. HKO has invented the world-first LIDAR Wind shear Alerting System (LIWAS)  and uses it operationally for alerting of low-level wind shear and turbulence at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). Other main activities include:

• Operation of short-range Doppler LIDARs (with a maximum measurement range in the order of 3 to 6 km) for monitoring building-induced airflow disturbances and studying the characteristics of wake vortex of the aircraft in Hong Kong. This is the first application in the world to use short-range Doppler LIDAR for real-time monitoring of building effect on the low-level wind at an airport.

• Evaluation and comparison of Doppler LIDARs, for example, the statistics of measurement range and the accuracy of radial velocity measurements for co-located LIDARs. Such knowledge and experience are much sought after by Members planning to implement Doppler LIDARs.

• Operational use of algorithms for real-time determination of Eddy Dissipation Rate (EDR), an internationally-adopted measure of aviation turbulence intensity from Doppler LIDAR. This has built up an extensive data source for inter-comparison and calibration of EDR against those derived from other Doppler LIDARs and from aircraft data.
