WMO-Measurement Lead Centre- Torino (Italy)

WMO-Measurement Lead Centre Traceability and Field Metrology

(Torino, Italy)

General Site Information

Torino Measurement Lead Centre is actively engaged in a wide range of activities that support meteorological, cryosphere, marine, and air quality research:

• Field testing of instrumentation for meteorological, cryosphere, marine and air quality applications

• Evaluation of uncertainty in meteorology and climate

• Scientific research in improving measurement procedures and reduce uncertainties in measurement of physical and chemical ECVs

• Experiments to improve the WMO siting classification

• Support to the GCOS GSRN, GCOS GRUAN, and several WMO expert teams

• Training courses in metrology for meteorology, correct use of terminology, uncertainty evaluation

• Calibration of sensors used in meteorological stations, permafrost and high mountain sites, marine research, carbon dioxide (CO2) and ozone analysers

• Primary standards in temperature, pressure, humidity; reference standards for amount fraction of CO2 in air/nitrogen and for seawater pCO2.

• Development of gas reference standards and methodologies for CO2 stable isotopes analysis

• Development of Certified Reference Materials in gas phase

• Accreditation and supervision of accredited laboratories

• Intercomparisons of instruments – Interlaboratory comparisons (Pilot and Organizer)

• Leadership of joint scientific projects in metrology for meteorology (MeteoMet)

• Testing of radiosondes, temperature and humidity sensors for ground stations

• Development of non-contact temperature sensors and guidance for the calibration of non-catching rain gauges
