Strengthening Research Coordination: RA VI Achievements Highlighted at WMO Research Board Session

The Eleventh Session of WMO Regional Association VI (RA VI), held in Geneva from 7 to 9 October 2024, highlighted important advancements in aligning regional research efforts with the global programmes of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The Chair of the RA VI Group on Research and the RA VI Representative at the Research Board presented a report outlining key achievements in coordinating regional activities with WMO’s Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW), World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), and World Weather Research Programme (WWRP). The report emphasized the integration of these programmes through cross-cutting initiatives addressing challenges such as climate adaptation, air quality, and disaster resilience.

A proposal was also made to include a dedicated session in the RA VI Scientific Forum focusing on collaboration with WMO Research Programmes. This session would highlight the activities of the WMO Research Programmes within RA VI and foster deeper engagement between regional and global research efforts.

The session also spotlighted various research projects demonstrating RA VI's leadership in advancing scientific collaboration. These initiatives focus on enhancing predictive capabilities for severe weather, improving atmospheric monitoring systems, and supporting regional climate modeling for adaptation planning.

This alignment of regional priorities with global research goals reflects RA VI’s commitment to fostering science-driven solutions that address both local and international environmental challenges. For more details on the presentation, click here.
