EUMETNET Visit to WMO: Advancing Collaboration with the Regional Office for Europe

Representatives of EUMETNET (Network of European Meteorological Services), including the Executive Director, Dr. Klemen Bergant, and Programmes and Projects Coordinator, Claudia Keller, recently visited the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) headquarters for a two-day engagement.

They were accompanied by the Head of WMO EU Affairs Office, Mr Christophe Jacob, who is the WMO Representative to the EU. In this role, he establishes and maintains critical links between the World Meteorological Organization and the European Union, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. Through the specific nature of joint liaison office that he manages, he ensures the availability of a single-entry point to the Meteorological and hydrological community (including to the European Meteorological Infrastructure, such as EUMETSAT, ECMWF and EUMETNET).

This visit built on the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organizations, aiming to strengthen collaboration on shared priorities.

The visit featured high-level meetings, including discussions with the WMO Secretary-General and a focused session with the Regional Office for Europe. The exchange with the Regional Office highlighted opportunities to enhance cooperation, particularly in capacity development initiatives aligned with regional priorities.

Special attention was given to leveraging efforts on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, emphasizing the need for joint efforts to streamline research and operational applications.

The programme also addressed initiatives such as Early Warning for All, the Aircraft-Based Observations and WMO-IATA Collaborative Implementation plans, EUMETCAL programme and others. These discussions underscored the importance of aligning efforts with the priorities of Regional Association VI (Europe) to deliver coordinated and impactful outcomes for Members.

The MoU between WMO and EUMETNET establishes a framework for closer cooperation, including the engagement of EUMETNET experts in WMO consultations and working groups. This integration aims to ensure aligned implementation of regional strategies and enhance the effectiveness of joint activities.

This visit marks a significant milestone in the partnership between WMO and EUMETNET, setting the stage for a unified approach to advancing meteorological and hydrological services across Europe.

Looking ahead, the partnership between WMO and EUMETNET is ready to deepen further, with a focus on advancing shared goals and delivering greater benefits to Members through innovative and coordinated initiatives. In this context, Dr. Radics, the Director of the Regional Office for Europe, will attend the EUMETNET Assembly planned for 12–13 December 2024 in her capacity as WMO representative. Her participation will serve as a key opportunity to strengthen collaboration and align strategic priorities for the future.
