7th Meeting of the RA VI RCC Coordination Team

The RA VI RCC Coordination Team held its seventh meeting virtually on November 5th and 6th, with eight participants including the RA VI RCC Coordinator, node leaders, the MEDCOF coordinator, WMO Secretariat officers, and the host representative. The meeting focused on reviewing the outputs from the 2024 RA VI RCC User Forum, progressing past actions, and planning key initiatives to meet growing climate services demands, including the establishment of a Projections Node.

Key Topics Discussed

  1. Review of RCC User Forum Outputs & RCC Users Survey Results
The meeting began by reviewing the outcomes of the RA VI RCC User Forum and survey results, which highlighted an increasing demand for multi-year and decadal climate projections, particularly in temperature and precipitation. The need to create a dedicated Projections Node was discussed as a priority to meet these demands.

Steps for establishing the Projections Node were outlined, including consultations with potential node leads, a capacity assessment of Member institutions, and a focus on operational considerations. Challenges such as varying capacities and data methodologies across different countries were also addressed. Proposed actions include organizing a regional workshop, refining data-sharing capabilities, and assessing institutional readiness to support the new node.

  2. Review of Actions from the 2020 RCC User Forum
The team reviewed past actions, closing completed tasks and identifying areas requiring further attention, especially regarding data exchange, climate advisories, and enhancing station density in underrepresented areas. New tasks were proposed to address emerging sectors like health and agriculture.
  3. Strategic Planning & Future Actions
Strategic discussions emphasized prioritizing actions like improving collaboration on sub-seasonal forecasting, expanding RCC frameworks to cover additional subregions, and enhancing the usability of climate advisories.

A proposed future workshop will focus on expanding the RCC framework, enhancing climate projections, and integrating third-party data guidelines. Workshops and consultations will continue to assess the technological capacity of RA VI Members, ensuring RCCs can support developing regions with limited infrastructure.

Next Steps

  • Follow-up consultations with potential node leads, including institutions like the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.
  • Organize workshops to refine Member needs and improve data-sharing.
  • Continue strategic planning to expand the RCC framework and align RCC efforts with global climate initiatives like Destination Earth and the Aspect Project.

The meeting underscored the importance of continued collaboration within RA VI to enhance climate services and ensure long-term sustainability. Efforts will focus on improving data access, refining operational practices, and addressing the increasing demand for advanced climate services. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for December 3, 2024, to finalize the plans for the upcoming year.
