RA VI RCC Workshop Sets Strategic Priorities for Regional Climate Services

The WMO RA VI Regional Climate Centre (RCC) Network Workshop, held from 8–10 April 2025 in Lisbon, brought together over 70 participants from across the Region. Hosted by Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the event marked a major step in strengthening regional collaboration and shaping the future of climate services in RA VI.

Experts from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, RCC, research institutions, and partner organizations shared experiences, assessed current capacities, and co-designed strategic directions for the RCC Network.

The workshop resulted in the identification of several strategic priorities and actionable steps.

  • Joint Participant Statement adopted, setting five priorities:
    • Enhance operational climate prediction and projection.
    • Improve accessibility of user-focused climate monitoring outputs.
    • Evolve RCOFs into broader Regional Climate Forums (RCFs).
    • Address data/infrastructure gaps in areas like drought and soil moisture.
    • Strengthen collaboration, innovation, and training across the region.
  • Strong Call for Support from WMO RA VI and SERCOM to sustain momentum and ensure implementation.
  • Strategic Roadmap (in progress), guided by workshop insights and built around actionable, policy-relevant climate data and services.

All workshop materials are available on the event website, and photos capturing key moments will be shortly made available on the WMO Regional Office for Europe Flickr account.

The workshop highlighted the importance of people, partnerships, and a shared vision in advancing impactful climate services across the Region.
