WMO Regional Office for Europe Joins the European Climate and Health Observatory
The WMO Regional Office for Europe (RA VI) has joined the European Climate and Health Observatory (ECHO) as a partner to strengthen the integration of climate, weather, and environmental information into public health decision-making.
Europe faces increasing climate-related health risks, from extreme heat and poor air quality to water scarcity and dust events. By collaborating with ECHO, WMO RA VI can contribute its expertise in meteorology, hydrology, and climate services to help inform timely, evidence-based interventions and improve resilience across the region.
Through this partnership, RA VI supports ECHO’s mission of providing actionable knowledge on climate-related health risks, impacts, and adaptation strategies. WMO contributes by developing and operationalizing early warning systems for heat, air quality, ultraviolet radiation, sand and dust storms, and hydrological risks, while also offering technical guidance, open-access data, and climate–health bulletins. The Regional Office strengthens capacity through workshops, training, and regional forums, fostering collaboration between meteorological and health communities. Engagement in global and regional initiatives, including EW4All and the WMO–WHO Joint Climate and Health Office, ensures that climate science informs public health planning and adaptation.
This collaboration will enhance Europe’s preparedness and resilience to climate-sensitive health risks, supporting evidence-based public health interventions and a climate-literate health community.
