Artificial Intelligence for Detection and Attribution of Extreme Weather Events in Europe Webinar

The WMO Working Group on Research has launched a new lecture series – the Research to Operations Exchange (ROX) lectures – designed to bring researchers, practitioners, and policymakers together to explore how innovations can strengthen hydro-meteorological services worldwide.

The inaugural lecture, held on 24 September 2025, attracted a high level of participation from across Europe and beyond. It highlighted the XAIDA project (Extreme Events: Artificial Intelligence for Detection and Attribution), funded under the EU Horizon 2020 programme. Experts demonstrated how artificial intelligence is being applied to detect and attribute extreme weather events in Europe, supporting science-based decision-making and advancing service capabilities.

Discussions emphasized both the potential and challenges of AI in forecasting and detection, including the need for well-structured, AI-readable data, clearer communication of uncertainties to the public, and significant investment in human and technical resources to ensure research results can be successfully integrated into operational services.

The recording of the lecture is available on the WMO YouTube channel at Artificial Intelligence for Detection and Attribution of Extreme Weather Events in Europe
