This monograph begins with a discussion on the definition of the boundary layer and its importance to the dynamics of the atmosphere, the exchange of heat and water vapour between the surface and the boundary layer and on the structure of the latter under stable conditions. This leads to an exposition of the current theoretical treatment of the boundary layer. Consideration is given to the role played by the lower boundary (land and water surfaces). The presentation concludes with a look at future prospects in this complex and challenging field.
