Survey on Requirements for NWP Data and Products

Dear Members,

The Global Data-processing and Forecasting System (GDPFS) is a worldwide network of operational centres operated by WMO Members. Its role is to process observations and predict the future state of the Earth system using advance science and cutting-edge technology, making operational analysis and forecast products available on multiple spatial and temporal scales. Detailed specifications of mandatory GDPFS products are defined in the Manual on the GDPFS (WMO-No. 485).

The Standing Committee on Data Processing for Applied Earth System Modelling and Prediction (SC-ESMP) under the Infrastructure Commission is launching this survey in order to collect user needs on numerical weather prediction (NWP) products, in response to the requests made by the recent WMO Extraordinary Congress regarding the WMO Unified Policy for the International Exchange of Earth System Data (Resolution 1 (Cg-Ext(2021))).

Collected information will be used to:

  • understand and analyse Members’ needs on the mandatory GDPFS products in the short-range to seasonal time scales;
  • amend the product specifications defined in the Manual on the GDPFS (WMO-No. 485) in close coordination with the Services Commission;
  • shape future development and evolution of the GDPFS.

This survey comprises three parts, spanning time scales from short- and medium-range, sub-seasonal, to seasonal prediction. Each part of this survey is to be submitted separately. You may assign the respective part to different personnel in your organization.
