SCMREX is a WWRP Research and Development Project which aims to improve our understanding of the structures and evolution of the South China heavy-rain-producing storms during the monsoon outbreak period and improve prediction of these high-impact rainfall events through field campaigns, data processing and sharing, numerical modeling and analysis. Initiated and organized by the China Meteorological Administration, SCMREX consists of four integrated components:field campaign data collection/processing/sharing, numerical modelling study and physical mechanism study. Endorsed by WWRP in 2013, SCMREX has attracted widespread participation and cooperation of many countries, notably, Australia, India, Japan, the Philippines, Republic of Korea, and USA.

First SCMREX International Workshop

(Beijing, China, 12-13 April 2017)

THEME:  Understanding the Science and Prediction of Severe Monsoon Weather.

Workshop Programme        Information Note

               SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES

To better understand development of the heavy-rain-producing systems in Southern China during the pre-summer rainy season, focusing on the roles of PBL processes and underlying surface Low Level Jet and meso-scale circulations in association with fronts microphysical processes.

To improve QPF skill by: better understanding of multi-scale precipitation processes, data assimilation impact studies and model physics scheme improvement and convection-permitting (1-4km) ensemble experiments
