The SIGMET Coordination pilot project was organized as a follow-up on the “Jakarta Recommendations on Regional Cooperation for Enhancing Meteorological Services for International Air Navigation by the WMO Members in Southeast Asia” agreed by the Regional Forum held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in April 2015. The pilot project on SIGMET coordination involving the Meteorological Watch Offices (MWO) of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore was initiated with the kick-off meeting, held in Singapore, 25-26 May 2016. The objective of this pilot project was to test and promote coordination in the issuance of SIGMET through real-time consultation and information sharing between the neighbouring countries.
The five-month pilot phase of the project started on 5 October 2016 and will finish on 4 March 2017. During this period, the five participating MWOs have been conducting coordination of the preparation and issuance of SIGMET information.
A wrap-up meeting of the SIGMET Coordination pilot project will be held from 27 to 29 March 2017 in Singapore. The purpose of the wrap-up meeting will be:
- To review and analyse the results of the quasi-operational pilot phase;
- To present and analyse a set of selected SIGMET coordination case studies;
- To analyse the operational coordination procedures used during the pilot phase and provide feedback for their further improvement;
- To inform and engage additional meteorological watch offices from adjacent countries to take part in the SIGMET coordination effort;
- To formulate a set of recommendations for the transition from “quasi-operational” to operational regime of SIGMET coordination.
