Background

The recent WMO Extraordinary Congress adopted the WMO Unified Policy for the International Exchange of Earth System Data (Resolution 1 (Cg-Ext(2021))).  The Commission for Observation, Infrastructure and Information Systems (INFCOM) is requested to implement the WMO Unified Data Policy and one important outcome is broader and easier access to high-quality numerical weather prediction (NWP) and analysis products for Members. Some core data requirements in the WMO Unified Data Policy are apparently linked to the Manual on the Global Data-processing and Forecasting System (GDPFS) (WMO-No.485) and it is urgently requested to review the data and products for numerical weather prediction (NWP), which are available through GDPFS, and update the list of core data to meet the needs of Members. Such changes would ensure the discovery and the sustainable provision of the quality-assured core data.

Objectives

The key objectives of the Symposium will be, inter alia, to:

  • review existing capabilities and activities of GDPFS for short-range to seasonal numerical prediction;
  • articulate user requirements for data and products of short-range to seasonal numerical prediction from Members, and understand shortcomings in current capabilities;
  • identify concrete actions to ensure that the GDPFS meets all key requirements from Members; and
  • develop a coordination mechanism among World Meteorological Centres (WMCs) and Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) to better leverage GDPFS activities.

Expected Benefits and Outcomes

It is expected that the Symposium will accelerate the evolution of the GDPFS, will improve data discoverability and accessibility, and will identify the needs of Members on NWP data and products.

The Symposium is expected to deliver the following outcomes:

  • collection of the needs on short-range to seasonal numerical prediction, and identify gaps in the current provision by GDPFS centres;
  • evolution of the existing GDPFS activities to prepare and provide core data of short-range to seasonal numerical prediction;
  • mechanism to support Members to access high-resolution global NWP data and products, including the initial and boundary conditions for limited-area models;
  • establishment of a coordination mechanism among WMCs and RSMCs to facilitate the implementation of new requirements to meet user needs.

Format

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is hosting the Symposium in Geneva from 29 to 31 August 2022, daily from 09:00 to 17:00/17:30 CEST (07:00 – 15:00/15:30 UTC). The Symposium will be conducted primarily as a face-to-face meeting; however, remote access via Zoom will also be made available in case any participant is not able to attend in person.

Interpretation in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish will be provided in the main sessions.

Intended Participants

Participation in the Symposium is open to all, but particularly representatives from the following will be invited:

  • WMO Members
  • Representatives of WMCs
  • Experts of INFCOM, including representatives of RSMCs
  • Experts of SERCOM/RB, including representatives of RSMCs
  • Technical experts from 6 regional associations
