Mission

To advance the science of the social and economic application of weather related information and services and review and assist in the development and promotion of societal and economic related demonstration projects.

WG SERA

The Working Group on Societal and Economic Research Applications (SERA) had transitioned from a group devoted to THORPEX issues to one that has the responsibility for the entire range of time-scales and research issues associated with the WWRP. Jane Rovins (DRRS) and Linda Anderson-Berry (BoM) are currently co-Chairs of the SERA Working Group.

NEWS

WWRP is proud to announce that Dr Jane Rovins, co-chair of WG SERA was inducted to the 2015 International Women in Honeland Security and Emergency Management Hall of Fame on 14 November in ceremonies held during the International Network of Women in Emergency Management-USA 63rd Annual Conference held in Nevada, USA. Dr Rovins launced and headed the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) International Programme Office linking sciences, policy and practice globally - the first programme office of this type in Asia (China). Also, she is the first woman and founding President of the Natural Hazard Mitigation Association (NHMA).

Dr David Johnston, newest member of the WG SERA, is currently the Chair of the IRDR Science Committee. Dr Johnston is a Senior Scientist at GNS Science (New Zealand’s Geological Survey) and Director of the Joint Centre for Disaster Research in the School of Psychology at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand. He has served on the IRDR Science Committee since 2008.

 

 

RESEARCH PRIORITIES

 

Estimation of the economic (social) value of weather information;

Understanding and improving the use of weather information in decision making;

Understanding and improving the communication of weather forecast uncertainty;

Development of user-relevant verification methods; and

Development of decision support systems and tools.

Develop a joint JWGFVR/SERA project focused on The Integrated Global Grand Ensemble (TIGGE) tropical cyclone tracks (CXML data) or heavy precipitation product(s)

Develop a publication: Applications of seasonal to sub-seasonal weather and climate predictions: An annotated bibliography

Prepare a guidance document that can be used by project proponents in the design, costing and implementation of SERA elements of proposals seeing endorsement from WWRP

Prepare the draft proposal for a SERA Research & Development Project: Understanding the Societal and Economic Dimensions of weather-related warning systems
