COP27 side-event: 2022 State of Climate Services: Energy Report

''2022 State of Climate Services: Energy Report''

Venue: Science for Climate Action Pavilion (IPCC-WMO-MERI-Egypt)

Tuesday, 15 November, 14:00-1530 EET (UTC+2)

Background:

The 2022 WMO State of Climate Services report focuses on the issue of energy, a subject that continues to dominate discussion and debate as it affects every single community, business, sector, and economy, in all parts of the world. Reaching net zero by 2050 will mean a complete transformation of our global energy system, placing a switch to lower emissions electricity production and increased energy efficiency at the center of the worldwide response. But the transition to clean energy calls for investment in improved weather, water and climate services that can be used to ensure that our energy infrastructure is resilient to climate-related shocks, inform on measures to increase energy efficiency across multiple sectors, and harness renewable sources of energy.

Objective:

The event will present the report’s findings and lessons learned to help countries, funding agencies and development partners to assess the steps needed to address gaps in the climate services value chain to support the energy transition and achieve greater resilience and energy security. Some examples on how countries improved their energy security and enhanced their energy transition plans through better climate services will be showcased.
