Study Group on Renewable Energy Transition (SG-RENE)
Energy stands as a priority sector within the WMO Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), as stated in WMO Resolution 63 (Cg-17). The WMO Service Commission (SERCOM) Study Group on Renewable Energy Transition (SG-RENE) is established for the period 2024–2027 based on the achievements of the Study Group on Integrated Energy Services (SG-ENE) 2020–2024. The SG-RENE is composed of 19 experts (16 core members, 2 associated members and 1 focal point) selected from the WMO Expert Network and approved by the SERCOM Management Group Members. Purpose
In Resolution 63 (Cg-17) — Energy as an Additional Priority Area of the Global Framework for Climate Services, the World Meteorological Congress decided to pilot interventions in selected countries to support Members to develop sustainable energy pathways. The general purpose of the Study Group on Renewable Energy Transition (SG-RENE) is as follows:
Enhance Energy Transition and Efficiency: Explore and define a global supporting mechanism for WMO Members to facilitate moving towards a sustainable energy system transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy production. In the context of the policy recommendations of the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement, countries should aim to triple their capacity of renewable energy and double energy efficiency by the end of 2030.;
Increase Energy Resilience and Security: Explore the impacts of climate variability and the risks arising from climate change on national renewable energy production systems, and support Members in building and operating a climate-resilient energy system (with a focus on Renewables)
