RA VI Coordination Panel on Hydrology Holds Kickoff Meeting

The RA VI Coordination Panel on Hydrology, established by the 19th Session of RA VI in October 2024, held its kickoff meeting on 20 June 2025. Chaired by Angela Corina (Italy), Regional Hydrological Advisor, the meeting launched the Panel’s efforts to enhance coordination on water-related issues across the Region.

Key Objectives and 2025 Priorities

The Panel agreed on its working methods and set initial priorities:

  • Organize the next RA VI Hydrological Advisers’ Forum (before WMO Extraordinary Congress in October 2025);
  • Prepare a regional statement on water resources (linked to WMO’s HydroSOS initiative);
  • Begin planning for the RA VI Hydrological Assembly (to be held in 2026).

Supporting Regional and Global Hydrology Goals, the Panel will:

  • Advise the RA VI Management Group on hydrology and cross-cutting water issues;
  • Contribute to implementing the WMO Hydrology Strategy and Action Plan;
  • Promote collaboration with river basin authorities and support regional hydrological centres;
  • Feed into global WMO initiatives such as HydroSOS, WHOS, RBON, and Early Warnings for All.

Next Steps

The Panel plans to meet 2–3 times per year, primarily online. The next meeting is expected in September 2025. Members will also provide input to finalize the list of key hydrological variables for RBON.
