Task Team on Social Science and Geophysical Science Integration
Background
The Task Team on Social Science and Geophysical Science Integration (TT-SSGSI) was established by the Research Board (RB) in response Resolution 35 (Cg-19), which decided that the RB will advance the WMO Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) recommendation #6 on developing a closer integration of geophysical and social sciences through a concept note.
The SAP is the scientific advisory body of the Organization, providing forward-looking strategic advice on emerging challenges and opportunities related to the mandate of WMO for the purpose of long-term planning. The SAP developed the SAP Science & Technology Vision Paper that included eight recommendations to the WMO that the SAP believes should be acted upon to prepare the weather, water and climate communities for the future. These recommendations were appraised by the RB and the Nineteenth World Meteorological Congress (Cg-19) adopted a recommendation on how to move forward with the advancement of these recommendations. Resolution 35 (Cg-19) – Scientific Advisory Panel Recommendations with Research Board Appraisal decides that “SAP Recommendation #6 on developing a closer integration of geophysical and social sciences to be advanced through a concept note developed by the RB in cooperation with SERCOM and the WMO Panel on Socioeconomic Benefits”.
Scope and Deliverables
Under the guidance of the RB, the TT-SSGSI will focus on the integration of social science and geophysical sciences in the context of research to operations (R2O) within the mandate of WMO. Through effective collaboration and consultation with WMO sponsored and co-sponsored research programmes (affiliated bodies), the Commission for Weather, Climate, Hydrological, Marine and Related Environmental Services and Applications (SERCOM), the Panel on Socioeconomic Benefits and other relevant WMO bodies, the TT-SSGSI will: Map ongoing activities across the Research Board’s subsidiary and affiliated bodies that integrate social and geophysical sciences;
- Capture examples of successful R2O across relevant WMO bodies that have integrated social science and geophysical science;
- Identify gaps, challenges, and opportunities to advance the integration of social science and geophysical science in support of R2O; and
- Develop a concept note on the above activities that addresses SAP Recommendation #6 on developing a closer integration of geophysical and social sciences.
