Regional projects

Aligned with the WMO SG-ENE Capacity Development plan, a wide range of technical assistance on weather and climate services for the energy sector will be provided to WMO members and National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) through the ongoing WMO regional projects. In addition, the WMO SG-ENE secretariat will actively raise funds and develop proposals for regional projects to ensure that the energy sector and its emerging needs for weather and climate services will be addressed by developing required capacities in NMHS. The following two ongoing regional projects are highlighted as examples of providing such technical assistance.

  • ENANDES project (ENhancing Adaptive Capacity of ANDEan Communities through Climate Services) aims to increase the resilience and adaptive capacity to climate variability and change of highly vulnerable communities living in the Andes in Colombia, Chile and Peru. Energy is one of the focused sectors together with Agriculture and Water.

  • FOCUS-Africa project (Full-Value chain Optimised Climate User-centric Services for Southern Africa) aims to develop full value chain climate services in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, by targeting specific sectors, energy included, through relevant case studies, while strengthening the underpinning climate prediction and projection science and assessment of associated socio-economic benefits. FOCUS-Africa project has two energy-related case studies: Energy and Water in Malawi and Energy in Tanzania.
