Task Team on Data Exchange with the Research Sector
Background
The WMO community recognizes the critical importance of ensuring reliable, robust, and equitable access to the weather, climate, and water, and related environmental data for all nations. This has made it necessary to review and update WMO’s data policy. One challenge will be to increase awareness of products already available for free and unrestricted access and use, and to understand user perspectives regarding additional needs, especially in terms of data required by the research community.
Scope
The role of TT-DERS is to identify research community needs around recommended data and to advocate for free mutual sharing (non-commercial purposes) between National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and academia entities and to support policy decisions on science-based weather, water, climate and related environmental information and services. Task Team activities will consist of information gathering, analysis, and outreach/promotion, delivered by a series of implementation tasks:
- Consultations with research communities studying weather, climate, water, cryosphere, and atmospheric composition on data availability;
- Identification of case studies or use cases to be documented as best practice exemplars;
- Involvement of the research community in monitoring implementation, and identifying problems or opportunities;
- Outreach to NMHSs on data exchange benefits.
The Task Team will:
- Consult with research communities studying weather, climate, water, cryosphere, and atmospheric composition on data availability
- Identify case studies or use that can be documented as best practice examples
- Involve the research community in monitoring implementation and identifying problems or opportunities
- Outreach to NMHSs on the benefits of data exchange
