Aviation | News | 2022-04-10 | IATA publishes 2021 Safety Report with input from WMO
The 2021 Safety Report of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) was published in April 2022 and is available for download here.
Through his involvement in IATA's Accident Classification Task Force (ACTF), Head of WMO's Services for Aviation Division, Greg Brock, directly contributed to the analysis of the 2021 accidents reflected in this latest report.
As alluded by the Chair of the ACTF in the latest Safety Report, 2021 shows the lowest all-accident rate recorded in IATA's accident classification database since 2005, and the total number of accidents, fatal accidents and fatalities all declined against the five-year average. Also unprecedented was, for the first time in the past 17 years, the ACTF did not classify any runway excursion accidents. However, the community cannot lower its guard because, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 was another unique year in aviation history, with only 55% of the pre-pandemic traffic flown in 2019, but 16% higher number of sectors flown compared to 2020
The 58th edition of the Annual Safety Report (2021) includes further in-depth review and analysis of these and other global and regional aviation statistics, including those where adverse weather or other meteorological conditions were a causal factor in aviation incidents and accidents such as loss of control in flight (LOC-I).
