HydroSOS in RA III

Background

The Regional Association for South America (RA III) Working Group in Hydrology (RA III WGH) has convened at the end of 2022 at the HydroSOS Implementation Plan Development Workshop and produced an RA III HydroSOS Implementation Plan, which was endorsed at the World Meteorological Congress 19 (Cg-19) in June 2023.

Activites

National Implementations

Several countries have introduced the HydroSOS methodologies into their own Hydrological Bulletins or are working on integrating HydroSOS into their hydrological platforms. Some examples are below:

S2S Hydrological Prediction

Resulting from the workshop, a pilot project was successfully completed in 2023 regarding the adaptation of a regional hydrological model for sub-seasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) hydrological prediction in the Huallaga Basin in Peru and the Uruguay River Basin, shared by Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

The project consisted of:

  • Hydrological model construction and adjustment
  • Adaptation for S2S model forecasting
  • Transfer for sustainability: Executables, source code, files for forecasts, operation manual
  • Capacity development on the hydrological model and the production of S2S forecasts

A presentation of the results is available in Spanish.

Project developement

Currently, the RA III WGH is working on developing a project proposal for implementation of HydroSOS in the whole RA III.
