[TT-NWPMD] Task Team on NWP Products Metadata

In order to improve the discoverability and accessibility of GDPFS products, the Secretariat initiated the development of GDPFS Web Portal in 2021. During the development of the Web Portal, many issues on the discovery metadata relating to GDPFS products have been identified, which hinder best use of the many available GDPFS products. In particular, the metadata of most GDPFS products is not comprehensive or consistent across the different producing centres.

The recent WMO Extraordinary Congress adopted the WMO Unified Policy for the International Exchange of Earth System Data (Resolution 1 (Cg-Ext(2021))).  The Commission for Observation, Infrastructure and Information Systems (INFCOM) is requested to implement the WMO Unified Data Policy and one important outcome is broader and easier access to high-quality numerical weather prediction (NWP) and analysis products for Members. Draft lists of core data on NWP outputs were presented to INFCOM-2 (Oct 2022).

Taking into account that RSMCs are requested to provide core data on NWP outputs and WIS is evolving to WIS 2.0, SC-ESMP established this task team to define metadata specifications and WIS 2.0 structure for NWP products. The task team is having its first meeting on 24-26 January 2023.

The meeting report is available here.
