WICAP Airline Workshop - Aircraft-based meteorological data improving aviation weather services
Welcome to the online WICAP Airline Workshop organized under the WMO-IATA Collaborative AMDAR Programme (WICAP) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Wednesday 28th September at 13:30-17:00 Eastern African Time (+3 UTC).
Accurate weather forecasts are essential for the airlines and aviation industry in order to improve flight planning; to operate safer and to save on operational costs. Weather observations are the baseline for knowing the current status of the atmosphere for accurate short and long-term weather forecasts, for which the weather observations from upper air by aircraft play a critical role.
The benefits, both direct and indirect, to aviation are derived from the improved accuracy of weather products and services provided to the airline and the aviation industry.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is hosting the hybrid WICAP Airline Workshop for African aviation partners and stakeholders with a goal bringing together the African airlines, IATA, the Data Service Provides, the WMO Focal Points on Aircraft-Based Observations of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) to learn and debate the industry’s safety and environmental agenda where the contribution to the WMO-IATA Collaborative AMDAR Programme could lead to significant benefits in optimizing flight operations related to challenges with weather phenomena.
