First RA VI Hydrological Assembly sets shared priorities for hydrology
The first RA VI Hydrological Assembly brought together WMO Members and the regional hydrological community in Bucharest on 2 October 2026 to address shared water challenges and agree on priorities for hydrology across the Region.
The Assembly marked an important milestone for RA VI, providing a dedicated forum for Members to discuss regional hydrological needs and shape the future direction of cooperation. Member perspective statements highlighted broad agreement on the regional priorities and recommendations, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening hydrological services across the Region.
Discussions emphasised the importance of capacity development, hydrological data and information, forecasting, observing systems and regional cooperation, as well as the contribution of hydrology to wider priorities such as Early Warnings for All and climate resilience.
The strong convergence among Members provided a clear basis for moving from agreed priorities to coordinated regional action. The Recommendations adopted by the RA VI Hydrological Assembly will contribute to the implementation of the RA VI Operating Plan and guide follow-up work with Members, Hydrological Advisers and regional partners.
The Assembly also provided the setting for the launch of the first RA VI Regional Water Resources Statement, an important new regional product that strengthens the evidence base for understanding water resources and hydrological conditions across the Region.
Held at a time when water-related challenges are increasingly prominent, the Assembly reinforced the importance of coordinated regional action and stronger cooperation to support resilient water management and hydrological services.
