From 17 to 21 November 2025, the WMO Secretariat and the Turkish State Meteorological Service, with the support of GISC Offenbach, hosted a WIS2 training workshop in the WMO Regional Training Centre in Ankara, Türkiye. This event was the fourth and final WIS2 training workshop of 2025, marking the conclusion of this year’s WIS2 training programme.

The event brought together 24 participants from 14 WMO Members. Participants came from Albania, Austria, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Georgia, Mauritius, Montenegro, North Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine, and Türkiye.

Mr. Volkan Mutlu COŞKUN, Permanent Representative of Türkiye with WMO, personally attended the opening session for this workshop and pledged his strong support for enabling international weather data exchange through the new WIS2 standard.

The 5-day WIS2 training program featured a dynamic mix of presentations on WIS2 architecture and hands-on exercises allowing participants to gain practical experience working with MQTT and the WIS2 standards. During the training, participants learned how to set up a WIS2 Node using the “WIS2-in-a-box”-software, an open-source reference implementation of a WIS 2.0 Node.

As with the recent WIS2 training held in Kenya, all hands-on exercises were conducted using the European Weather Cloud (EWC), allowing participants to connect, practice, and apply their skills in an isolated but realistic learning environment.

After 10 completed WIS2 training workshops, the program has evolved into a more standardized format. Key components now include a pre-training software-preparation briefing, structured practical sessions, guidance on WIS2 Node implementation, certificate presentations, and a post-workshop survey.
