Overview

The Fourth Session of the WMO Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP-4) focused on advancing the development of recommendations for the World Meteorological Congress on emerging topics, including tipping points, big data and artificial intelligence (AI) and provided an opportunity to discuss collaboration with WMO bodies and the UN Scientific Advisory Board (SAB).

Summary of Key Outcomes

  • Decided to collaborate with the UN SAB through the Director of Science and Innovation (D/SI) on formal and informal topics of joint interest and will keep D/SI
  • Next steps include:
    o    SAP big data group to work towards clarifying the scope of a virtual roundtable;
    o    SAP emerging topic leads to organize a follow up meeting with their group and provide an update on progress at the next SAP virtual meeting, and
    o    SAP members to prepare input to the Policy Advisory Committee strategic planning in February 2026.
