Capacities to provide climate services
This focus area addressed a component of the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), the Climate Services Information System (CSIS). The CSIS is a mechanism through which information about climate - past, present and future - is archived, analyzed, modeled, exchanged and processed.
ClimSA helped strengthening of the CSIS through capacity building for Regional Climate Centers (RCCs). An assessment of baseline capacities, gaps and needs was conducted and an Action Plan for strenghtening RCCs capacities was developed for each RCC.
ClimSA also supported the improvement of Climate Data Management Systems (CDMS) and assisted with the development and demonstration of a national climate services production chain, showcasing the value of providing and using tailored climate services.
Under ClimSA, an OpenSource CDMS was designed and tested. Recommendations on options for a WMO Open Source CDMS as well as CDMS requirements and recommendations for ACP countries were developed.
ClimSA also supported the deployment of Climsoft, a free open-source climate data management system (CDMS) designed to store historical climatic data. These data can be used to produce summary reports, maps, or diagrams, or subsets of the data can be extracted for further processing.
