WMO Regional Office for Europe, supported by the WMO regional team on sustainable development, contributes to the sustainable food system in Europe and Central Asia

Regional collaboration platform of the United Nations Organization is used as a collaboration mechanism for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of activities driven by demand of the UN Resident Coordinators and UN Country Teams in support of the Common Country Analysis and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (UNSDCF). The UNSDCF being an implementation agreement between UN and governments towards the achievement of the UN 2030 agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), determines and reflects the UN development system’s contributions in the country and shapes the configuration of UN assets required inside and outside the country.

WMO Regional Office for Europe, supported by the WMO regional team on sustainable development, contributes to the sustainable food system in the region, in collaboration with FAO and other UN specialized agencies by transferring the knowledge to the UN Resident Coordinators and the UN Country Teams.

For Zero Hunger, trends and progress made towards reaching the SDG 2 need to be monitored. In this connection, a regional overview of food security and nutrition is presented annually, including studies on the drivers, such as climate change, and the regional policy responses are exemplified.

Launch event of the 2020 Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Europe and Central Asia provides insights on affordability of healthy diets at national and subnational level, but also on hidden costs caused by climate change, weather, water and climate related disasters. What can be done to reduce the costs and how to ensure affordability so that all people can have access to healthy diets? These questions are addressed in the panel discussions by the WMO Regional Office for Europe, highlighting the essential role of multiple early warning systems and of the vital role of weather, water and climate information provided by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services.
