RA VI Management Group Reviews Progress at MG-11 - Highlights

The 11th RA VI Management Group meeting (MG-11) was held on 18 June 2025 alongside WMO EC-79, with over 30 participants joining in person and online. Chaired by RA VI President Dr Elena Mateescu, the meeting reviewed progress on regional priorities and discussed ways to strengthen coordination.

Key Highlights

  • Work is underway on the RA VI Work Plan 2026–2028.
  • Progress was noted on Early Warnings for All, RBON hazard prioritization, and agreement on regional climate service priorities.
  • Challenges persist due to limited engagement in some working groups, especially on infrastructure, prompting calls for stronger leadership and clearer roles.
  • The upcoming departure of Angela Chiara Corina as Regional Hydrological Adviser (end-November) was announced. She will continue to lead the new RA VI Coordination Panel on Hydrology.

Other Topics Discussed

  • Data Gaps: Low response to WMO’s 2025 data campaign and unequal national capacities were noted.
  • Artificial Intelligence: RA VI activities on AI (through ECMWF, EUMETSAT, EUMETNET) were highlighted; Free AI training resources and technical support through EUMETNET and ECMWF should be further promoted, and the region is expected to contribute to the new Joint Advisory Group on AI.
  • Regulatory Update: A proposed amendment to WMO Technical Regulations may require Members to formally designate national service providers for weather, flood, climate, and environmental warnings. Early preparation was strongly recommended.

Looking Ahead

The next meeting is planned for early October, ahead of the WMO Extraordinary Congress, to review progress and refine regional priorities.
